What Is Toncoin (TON)?
Originally developed by the Telegram team in 2017 under the name Telegram Open Network (TON), the project was intended to include a native cryptocurrency called "Gram." However, Telegram discontinued its involvement in 2020 following regulatory action by the SEC, and the Gram token was never launched.
Since then, independent developers and blockchain enthusiasts have continued developing the network, now called The Open Network. The TON Foundation plays a key role in supporting the project. Toncoin operates on a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, designed to enhance scalability and reliability.
The TON Foundation aims to enable users to control their digital identity, data, and assets by fostering a Web3 ecosystem within Telegram Messenger. The original technical framework was partly developed by Dr. Nikolai Durov, co-founder of Telegram and brother of Pavel Durov.
